This is a charity project created by Jacqui Alunni, and inspired by the call to do something for our Durban community on Mandela Day. They have decided to call themselves ‘Blankets 4 Happy Babes’ since ultimately they are trying to make some babies happy!
I did my first delivery of Baby Bags to Addington on Mandela Day this year, and the response was so overwhelmingly positive that I have decided to make it an ongoing project...
I am a mother of two young children (6 months and 24 months) so helping babies is a cause very close to my heart. Blankets 4 Happy Babes is collecting donations of baby clothes, toys, blankets, nappies and toiletries and making up baby care bags which are then hand delivered to moms in Addington Hospital's Maternity Ward.
Our sister operation, (run by my sister Sharon Burger,) in Pietermaritzburg, is called ‘Dress a Baby’ and is collecting and supplying baby bags to Greys Hospital, PMB.
I started with help & donations from my friends and moms in my area, and now we are requesting that more moms, companies and caring individuals get involved!
The newborn babies really need blankets and clothes, including vests and caps, but we are happy to receive and include anything a newborn baby and new mom would need. Any larger items donated are distributed through lucky draws when we visit the hospitals.
We are collecting donations of baby clothes (new or ‘good-as-new’), baby blankets, baby towels & facecloths, baby toys (toys are very well received as a luxury), baby toiletries including Vaseline, bum cream, aqueous cream, baby bath, baby powder, suntan cream etc. We are also happy to include items for mom like nipple cream, breast pads, maternity pads and panties.
We are also including larger clothes, but must ensure that every baby has at least one full outfit to wear immediately.
We try to include toweling or disposable nappies.
Several generous individuals have offered to knit baby caps, but we need donations of wool.
To date we have not been receiving enough blankets through the collections and so have been making receiving blankets ourselves. I have run raffles to raise money for the fabric but need to find further means to cover these costs. It costs about R10-R15 for the fabric for 1 blanket.
Currently we do not have a set timetable in terms of deliveries to the hospitals –we deliver when we have enough products. For Addington, this means we have to have at least 50 bags to make a delivery and 35 for Greys.
