With summer here we will soon be spending more time outdoors. We are all looking for ways of relaxing and spending quality time with our families, so why not pack a picnic basket and head for a park, garden, beach or mountains!
Mark of ‘Whisk it - Hands on Cooking' courses and hospitality training’ has given us moms a number of ideas to help us revive this art.
Mark suggests that although its easy to grab ready-made items from the local grocery store. Keep your picnic basket special. Rather make a homemade sandwich or quiche than a pre-made one!
Mark's tips for picnics for families:
Get the family involved in packing the bags and gathering the treats!
- Snacks: Cubes of cheese, freshly cooked cocktail sausages.
- Meal: Pack fresh cooked cold meats (try roast beef, roast chicken, smoked beef and smoked salmon). Instead of a traditional salad rather pack cru-detes (slices of cucumber, gherkins, asparagus, baby carrots, florettes of cauliflower, broccoli or baby corn. Serve with a lovely fresh yoghurt dip). Kids will love Sticky drumsticks, Mini pizza’s & quiches. Add boiled eggs and a potato salad for an unfussy light lunch.
- Dessert: Watermelon, melon & litchis are firm favorites. Add colourful meringues with a fudgy sauce to top it off!
Why not pack a surprise treat….
There is some wonderful funky plastic picnicware avaiable in stores right now. Great designs and also safe in little hands. And don’t forget to pack a Picnic blanket! You need to save yourself from ants, dust and weeds!
